Art Through Therapy

“It is a means of connecting what’s inside us with outside realities & experiences” in a creative way.

The creative process of art making is healing and life enhancing, being a potent form of communication that anybody of any age can do! No previous art experience is needed, as this creative process exists within every individual.

As a therapy it assists in expressing things that are perhaps too hard to say, too hard to hear. Through its non-verbal nature, Art Through Therapy may help create new connections and understandings around certain core issues of the participant’s life that may have been too traumatic to voice.

It is spontaneous, fulfilling work, not only in offering relief from negative, physical symptoms but assisting in finding meaning in this pain. The risk taking in the unfamiliar ‘process’ can engender confidence, which may translate into healthier decision-making in life. Through this experiential, action based therapy, the participant is invited to ‘do’ rather than ‘talk‘, engaging in the healing nature of the creative process.

Creating is done through using many different media, ranging from paints, pastels, clay, sticking and pasting, sewing, even using just hands. With mindfulness focusing, the participant is gently guided to explore whatever topic they choose and then is invited to give form to the spontaneous image or felt sense that has arisen.

Throughout the sessions, Rena utilises her background in psychology and psychotherapy training further assisting the participant in attaining a better sense of themselves, their wellbeing & wholeness. This further promotes the individual to future self regulate, with these new skills & understandings.

This is done in a safe, nurturing, non-judgmental manner-with the utmost respect given to each individual’s way of artistically expressing themselves. The main objective is the process, as well as the end result.
